Attic Rodent Prevention Tips
The attic is a warm, Westport, MA place for rodents to nest and breed. Because homeowners rarely use their attic, a small rodent infestation can grow undetected until it’s too late. Rodents are known carriers of dangerous diseases, and their droppings and urine can contaminate air circulating throughout the home.
The best way to prevent rodents from entering the attic is to seal entry points. This can be done with caulk and foam around the perimeter of the attic and around the vents. It’s also a good idea to add door sweeps to exterior doors, and repair broken window frames. Finally, trimming away dense vegetation such as ivy (especially if it grows up your home’s exterior) can make it harder for rats and mice to access your roof.
Rodents can chew through wiring and other insulation to gain access to the attic, posing a fire risk. They may also cause damage while digging for food in the attic or chewing their way into walls and ceilings to create nests. Signs of rodent activity include scurrying noises in the attic, droppings found near baseboards or ceiling corners, and damaged or chewed drywall.
Pest management professionals at Orlando-based Massey Services say prevention is the best approach to keeping mice and rats out of the attic. They recommend incorporating sanitation, exclusion, repellents, and trapping into an integrated pest management plan to keep attics clean, dry, and safe for residents and pets.
