Magic mushrooms are a mushroom dispensary ottawa III substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, but some people in the city are taking advantage of an unofficial grey market that allows them to purchase hallucinogens legally. A handful of stores have opened across the city, including a weed store and several mushroom shops that sell edibles like gummies and chocolate bars, as well as dried mushrooms. But the owners of these stores are not hiding the fact that they are selling illegal drugs.
One store owner, who asked to be identified only by his first name, said his shop on Dalhousie Street has been open a week and he gets between 20 and 50 customers a day. He says he’s willing to be prosecuted for running the store, which also has a selection of other products like teas and tinctures that contain psilocybin, because he believes it’s important to bring awareness to what he sees as an injustice.

Another store, a few blocks away on Bank Street, is currently closed after police raided the business. Officers initially called to the site to mediate a landlord and tenant dispute, but they also noted the sale of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, gummies and other products. A warrant was later executed at the address, and officers seized packages of dried mushrooms, other psilocybin-containing products and cash. Two men in their 20s were charged with possession of a controlled substance and possessing the proceeds of crime.
Eugene Oscapella, an Ottawa lawyer who teaches drug law and policy at uOttawa, says despite the popularity of these mushroom shops, they are illegal. He says police will likely take action if there’s a large enough amount of complaints, noise issues, reports that the store is selling to minors or other problems.
